Lisa Lisa

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Lisa Lisa knew at a young age she wanted to be in Radio. In Elementary school she participated in every extra curricular activity she could. She loved reading, so whenever there was a school program, she was the first to volunteer. In middle school, Lisa stayed active in school activities such as Student Council and Choir. Being elected Student Council President helped Lisa develop leadership skills. Choir, along with her parents love of music , made her appreciate a broader spectrum of music. These activities together helped Lisa get over a small problem of shyness.

As time went on, Lisa stayed in the school choir as well as her church choir. She also became a Lector at church. She developed a liking to public speaking and thought about pursuing a career in this field. Growing up, Lisa’s parents always encouraged her to choose a career that would make her happy and that she loved doing. So she thought…and thought…but nothing came to mind. Lisa wasn’t a bad student, but often got in trouble for…talking. She loved to talk, laugh and be the class clown, which often got her sent to detention or the corner. One day while sitting in the corner with nothing to do but think, Lisa had an epiphany. She realized what her career was going to be! She took her love of music, pubic speaking, talking, performing and being a class clown and came up with…a RADIO DJ!

From that point Lisa did what she could to get some experience with Radio. Since she had no experience in radio, she volunteered in the business office at KNON on Saturdays. Then one day the DJ on the air needed help answering the phones and asked Lisa if she could help. She jumped at the opportunity and from that point on, became a part of his tejano show. Lisa was having the time of her life until formatting changes caused the show to be cancelled. After high school, she continued to study Mass Communications in community college and got herself a regular job. The combination of school and work left her no time to actively pursue radio. Before she knew it, Lisa was caught up in the 40 hour workforce. Lisa had an opportunity to intern at KICK FM for a few months, but had a hard time committing any extra time to her radio dream.

Years passed and everytime Lisa listened to morning radio on her way to work, she thought, “that needs to be me on the radio”. She auditioned for other stations in the DFW area, but didn’t make the cut. Lisa didn’t let it get her down though because her parents always told her if it doesn’t happen, it wasn’t meant to be and that something better was out there. Then one morning, Lisa heard a morning show with a familiar voice…Mean Mauri. At that point she contacted Mauri and expressed her interest. Although there was nothing available at that time, Mauri gave her a chance to see how she interacted with him. He asked her to be the “Hot Chica of the Week” and visit the show. Lisa was part of the show that day and the chemistry was on point. Months went by and Lisa finally got the call to come and try out on the morning show for a week. The week passed, management loved the interaction and offered her the job as Co-Host/Traffic reporter and Entertainment reporter.

With persistence and determination, Lisa was able to attain the job she always longed for. Lisa is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of so many people’s mornings. It’s an honor to be able to reach out to the community, to inform and to entertain. She believes that laughter is the best medicine and we all should be able to laugh at ourselves.

Lisa would like to thank everyone who believed in her as well as her family for their continued support. She also wants to pass on the advice her parents gave to her which is “If you fall, get back up”, Always do your best in whatever you do” and “Knowledge is POWER” so stay in school!!
